The accuracy of laser flash analysis explored by finite element method and numerical fitting

29.11.2019

Our work has just been published in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. We investigated the curve fitting procedure essential for evaluating laser flash analysis (LFA) measurements.

In contrast to idealized theoretical models, LFA experiments show a multitude of possible error sources. This includes the duration of the heating pulse, heat losses to the environment and sample holder, nonopaque samples, and radiative heat transfer. To investigate the suitability of the model, we carried out accurate and comprehensive simulations. Finally, we demonstrate that thermal diffusivities ranging from only 0.16 W/mK up to 237 W/mK can be measured with the LFA technique. Relative errors are very small despite common experimental shortcomings.
